Fontemar® Fresh Water Generator:
Pure and Reliable Water for Ships

Ensuring a constant supply of fresh water is vital for the autonomy and operation of any vessel. The Fontemar® fresh water generator by evaporation is the naval engineering solution designed by Naval Torreiro to convert seawater into high-purity fresh water, both efficiently and reliably. Designed for on-board vessels as well as land-based facilities, each unit is a testament to our more than 40 years of experience at the service of the sea.

Why Install a Fontemar® Fresh Water Generator?

Choosing a Fontemar® generator is an investment in efficiency, durability, and peace of mind. Our equipment is engineered to deliver maximum performance with reduced operational and maintenance costs.

Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings

The system utilizes waste heat from the main or auxiliary engines (between 60°C and 90°C) for the evaporation process. This means it produces high-quality fresh water with minimal energy consumption, significantly lowering your vessel’s operational costs.

Minimal Maintenance Thanks to Smart Design

Our fresh water generator operates on the principle of vacuum distillation. By allowing seawater to boil at a very low temperature (approx. 46°C) , the formation of calcareous deposits—the main cause of failures and maintenance in other systems—is drastically minimized.

Exceptional Water Quality and Automated Control

The water produced is suitable for home use, high-pressure boilers, or engine cooling systems. Each unit includes a salinometer that constantly monitors water purity. If salinity exceeds the preset limit (e.g., 4 p.p.m.), a solenoid valve activates and diverts the impure water, ensuring only the highest quality water reaches your storage tanks.

Robust Design for the Marine Environment

Every component of the Fontemar® generator is built to withstand the demanding marine environment, ensuring longevity and reliable operation.

  • Generator Casing: The generator casing is built from robust 4mm thick AISI 316 L stainless steel for maximum corrosion resistance. Its purpose-built design is intelligently divided into two main sections: a lower heating chamber and an upper condensing chamber. For operational safety, it features a draining stopper and a safety valve set at 1.5 Kg/cm².

  • Dedicated Pumps: The system’s pumps feature high-quality electric motors with aluminum housings. Both the pump bodies and their impellers are made of bronze for an extended service life. The sea water pump is engineered to supply cooling water to the condenser and provide the high pressure (3.5 Kg/cm²) needed for the ejector to function correctly. The fresh water (distillate) pump reliably extracts the pure water from the unit and sends it to your storage tanks.

  • Heat Exchanger and Condenser: Built with a “U” tube bundle of cupro-nickel 90/10, a high-quality material offering superior resistance to seawater corrosion.

  • Steam Separator (Demister): Features a Monel screen, a highly resistant material that typically does not require replacement during the equipment’s lifetime.

  • Ejector Assembly: Made of RG-10 bronze with a stainless steel AISI 316L nozzle and diffuser for maximum durability.

How the Fresh Water Generator Works

The Fontemar® process is a distillation cycle optimized for the naval environment.

  1. Vacuum Creation: A seawater pump feeds an ejector which generates a high vacuum inside the generator’s casing and extracts the excess brine.

  2. Low-Temperature Evaporation: Seawater is heated by the engine’s waste heat and, due to the vacuum, boils at a low temperature, turning into pure steam and leaving salts behind.

  3. Steam Purification: The steam rises through the Monel separator (demister), where any remaining entrained seawater droplets are removed.

  4. Condensation: The pure steam cools upon contact with the condenser (which is cooled by incoming seawater), turning back into distilled water that is collected in a tray.

  5. Extraction: A distillate pump sends the produced fresh water, already verified by the salinometer, to the storage tank.
